Competing in the best new artist category, Justin Bieber was nominated for the awards along with other performers such as Jay-Z, who led the field with five nominations, and Beyonce, his wife, who scored four.
The BET Awards are typically awarded to black singers, actors, actresses and sports stars, but critics coined Justin as a cross-over artist.
Stephen Hill, BET’s President of Music Programing and Specials says, “Bieber has crossed the color boundaries the same way that hip-hop has crossed the boundaries the other way for a number of years”. In Los Angeles, the awards will be held on June 27.
singers Alicia Keys, Trey Songz and Canadian Melanie Fiona, who were tied with Beyonce with four nominations, will compete with Bieber and Young Monkey, Drake’s group, in the best new artist category.
“He’s had rhythm in his music,” said Hill. “He makes the type of music our audience likes.”
BET is the leading television network for African-American audiences, a division of Viacom.
