Auckland airport had tightened security to prepare for the 16-year-old pop star’s arrival, following a recent incident in Australia during which several girls were hospitalized amid a dash by some 5,000 fans that had prompted his concert to be canceled.

Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, helped launch his success by helping him post YouTube videos of himself singing R&B songs in 2007. Usher’s manager discover Bieber on the internet and the R&B singer became one of his music producers. Bieber and his mother later moved from Canada to Atlanta to focus on his career.

On Monday, paramedics pulled out of the swarming crowd some 10 girls who had fainted as the fans stormed toward Sydney’s Harbor, where Bieber, 16, was to perform an open-air concert. One girl out of the eight taken to a hospital was treated for a fractured knee cap, Australia’s Network Seven reported.

Bieber isn’t set to give a large concert in New Zealand but does plan on giving interviews and later performing for students in a school, his record label Universal Music told NZ TV.

Bieber has broken records with his chart-topping albums and performed at the White Houselast month. He often attracts large crowds of fans where ever he goes. A November appearance by Bieber at a shopping mall in New York was canceled when the crowd became unruly.

The star and his entourage were escorted out a side door at the airport as fans pressed forward in the arrivals area.

“Finally got to New Zealand last night. The airport was crazy. Not happy that someone stole my hat and knocked down my mama. Come on people,” Bieber wrote on his Twitter account.

On Wednesday he performed six songs at a private concert at an Auckland school and bungy-jumped from the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Australian police on Monday shut down a concert by Bieber over crowd safety fears after young fans were injured in surges hours before the start of the free event on the Sydney Harbour foreshore.

His debut single “One Time” was a huge hit last year and his album “My World 2.0″ has spent four weeks at the top of the US charts since its release last month.
